Mali, West Africa, June 25 - July 23, 2007

GLEAN traveled to Mali, West Africa in June 2007.

GLEAN students cruised by boat along the Niger River and by camel to villages on the edge of the Sahara desert. Then they backpacked through the Bandiagara Cliffs of southern Mali, where they visited with the Dogon, a people who claim to be the conduit between heaven and earth.

Jyl has been involved with experiential education for more than seven years.ÊDuring that time, she has helped guide two GLEAN expeditions, taught biology and ecology in ocean environments, worked on farms in Michigan and California and sustained her passion for photography, writing, and agriculture.Ê

Jyl has degrees in environmental journalism and a masterÕs in political science with an emphasis on public policy and community agriculture. In 2006, Jyl was able to bring her dream of traveling to Africa alive for GLEAN students as they ventured to West Africa and witnessed the lives of people along the Niger River and the forests of Ghana.
